CBSE Language Policy 2026
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has introduced an important update to its Language Policy for the 2026-27 academic session. This change aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework (NCF-SE 2023) to promote multilingual learning and strengthen students' communication skills.
Starting from 1st July 2026, all Class 9 CBSE students will study three languages (R1, R2, and R3). One of the biggest highlights is that at least two of these languages must be native Indian languages, encouraging students to stay connected with India's linguistic and cultural diversity. A foreign language can be selected only under the conditions specified by CBSE.
What Does This Mean for Students?
The new language policy is designed to make students more confident communicators while preserving India's rich linguistic heritage. Instead of focusing only on marks, the policy encourages practical language learning, better comprehension, and real-life communication skills.
Another positive aspect of this update is that there will be no Class 10 Board Examination for the R3 language. The assessment will be conducted internally by schools, and students will not be prevented from appearing in the Class 10 Board Examination because of R3.
